How many boosters for a SIR is not one magic number. It is expected value: any SIR in the set vs a named chase SIR, plus pack volume. This page does the math; the sealed-format guide compares ETB, UPC and display as products.
In this article
On a typical Mega Evolution set, the rateTCG model puts Special Illustration Rare near 4.5% per pack (any SIR in the set). You 'expect' about 1 SIR every 22 packs on average. A 9-pack ETB has ~34% odds of ≥1 SIR: too small to 'owe' the hit. A 36-pack display rises to ~81% and ~1.6 expected SIRs. For a named SIR (e.g. Mega Charizard ex), roughly divide by the number of SIRs in the set: often 150–220+ packs in expectation. TCGPlayer singles then win frequently.

Why there is no single pack count for a SIR
On Discord or Reddit, someone swears you need '30 packs'. Someone else says their ~$90 Amazon.com ETB spat two SIRs. Both can be true without being a rule. Lock the KPI: any SIR in the set, or one named chase. Then cross volume with live $/pack (Amazon.com, local shops) and the Near Mint TCGPlayer quote.
Concrete case: you want a ~$110 NM SIR. A Perfect Order ETB around $92 (rateTCG catalog, July 2026) offers ~0.4 any-SIR and often under 5% for the exact card if the set has 7–8 SIRs. Two ETBs already outspend the single with no guarantee. The rateTCG calculator exists to show that gap before you rip.
Quick formula: any SIR vs chase SIR
- Take the any-SIR pull rate (ME rateTCG: p ≈ 4.5% / pack).
- For a named SIR: roughly divide by the number of SIRs in the set (e.g. 4.5% ÷ 7 ≈ 0.64% / pack).
- Volume for a chance of ≥1 any-SIR: 1 − (1 − p)^n.
- Compare pack cost to the single price of your chase before stacking ETBs.
ME example with p ≈ 4.5%: for ~50% odds of ≥1 any-SIR, n ≈ 15 packs. For ~75%, n ≈ 30. Expectation of 1 SIR lands near 22 packs. A 9-pack ETB sits under the 50% line.
Pack volume → P(at least 1 SIR) on ME sets (p≈4.5%)
| Packs | Typical product | P(≥1 any SIR) | Expected SIRs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Bundle | ~24% | ~0.27 |
| 9 | ETB | ~34% | ~0.40 |
| 15 | ≈ 50% hit rate | ~50% | ~0.68 |
| 18 | UPC | ~56% | ~0.81 |
| 22 | ≈ 1 SIR expected | ~64% | ~1.0 |
| 30 | ≈ 75% hit rate | ~75% | ~1.35 |
| 36 | Display / booster box | ~81% | ~1.62 |
| 72 | 2 displays | ~96% | ~3.24 |
Approximation 1−(1−p)^n. rateTCG models, July 2026, not official The Pokémon Company rates.
Named chase SIR: the multiplier that hurts
If the set lists 7 SIRs, a named chase sits near p ÷ 7. Expectation of 1 copy often lands around 150–180 packs. At $6–8 per pack you are already in $900–1,400 of 'average' ripping for a card that may quote $90–150 NM on TCGPlayer. rateTCG habit: rip for fun / volume, buy the chase as a single.
Prismatic Evolutions: different math
On Prismatic Evolutions, rateTCG models the Special Illustration Rare slot much higher (~34% per pack). A 9-pack ETB has a strong chance of premium illustration hits. That still does not guarantee a named chase SIR (Umbreon and friends). Pack volume drops for generic hits, not necessarily for the exact card you are pricing on TCGPlayer.
ETB vs display for SIR volume
- 1 ETB: fun + promo; weak if your only KPI is forcing a SIR.
- 36-pack display: better match for ME expectation (often 1–2 SIRs), ~81% for ≥1 SIR.
- Multiple ETBs: fine if you like the format; compare $/pack to a display that day.
- One chase card: price the single before ripping 150–200 packs.
FAQ
How many boosters do I need for a SIR?
On ME (p≈4.5%): expect ~1 any-SIR every 22 packs. A 9-pack ETB has ~34% chance of ≥1 SIR, not a guarantee.
How many packs for a specific SIR (e.g. Charizard)?
Often 150–220+ packs in expectation depending on how many SIRs are in the set. Always compare to the Near Mint single on TCGPlayer.
Does a 36-pack display guarantee a SIR?
No. ~81% chance of ≥1 SIR on ME (p≈4.5%): zero still happens.
Prismatic Evolutions: how many packs for a SIR?
Far fewer than ME for illustration hits (slot ~34% in our models). A named chase SIR can still be rare: price singles vs volume.
How many packs for a 50% chance of any SIR?
On ME with p≈4.5%, about 15 packs for ~50% odds of ≥1 any-SIR. A single ETB (9) stays under that line.
